Chaplaincy is a specialized ministry; ministers serve not in a church, nor in a congregation, but to the public at large.  We are there to listen, care, and respond in an appropriate biblical manner, for such is the true nature of the chaplaincy.  We are committed to seeking the will of  God in our lives and in our faithful dedication to the service of Jesus Christ. We are united together to constantly renew our commitment to  a  deeper understanding of  serving  those in need.  We adhere to, cleave to, trust to have faith in, and rely on the Lord Jesus Christ for all guidance in responding to the needs of those we serve.

Membership with the Dayspring Chaplaincy attests to both competence and endorsement for the chaplain ministry. Membership is for Christian ministers who are in agreement with our affirmation of faith and ethical statement. Our mission is to maintain an association for chaplains and to establish guidelines in the practice of this specialized ministry. The standards we have developed help to ensure truly faithful and effective Christian chaplains

Chaplains minister in the name of our Lord and our church outside the church walls. They can be found in war zones, on military bases, at crime scenes, in a factory, in the homes of the dying, in surgery, the delivery room, and in the intensive care unit. Chaplains are pastors who are specially trained to minister to those who are in stressful or crisis situations. The training includes addressing spiritual issues that impact life and health, relationship counseling, building coping skills, issues on death and dying, grief, and many other areas of special needs. They are trained to use these skills with individuals and groups, which make chaplains excellent resource people for congregations experiencing crisis or grief.

With the increased use of technology and the decline in face-to-face interactions and communication, the work of the chaplain to be present in a one on one interaction will become more and more important. Chaplains will continue to offer the personal touch of Christ and the Church to a hurting world beyond the church walls. Research continues to show that those who receive pastoral care recover more quickly and have better resiliency. The need for chaplains continues to grow.

The Chaplain and Pastoral Counseling Ministry of the American Association of Christian Therapists supports chaplains and pastoral counselors working within the a private counseling ministry and ministers in a congregation or working independantly. Under the coordination of the Dayspring International leadership Network, the department organizes retreats, workshops, and courses, as well as posting pertinent articles and web links on the AACT web page.  Personal consultation by phone and e-mail is available for those seeking more specific, situational guidance as they practice in the fields of mental health and pastoral care.

Because ministry takes place in a complex, pluralistic world, the Dayspring International Leadership Network provides clear guidelines to help chaplains and pastoral counselors adhere to conservative, Orthodox teaching, spirituality, and healing traditions, while also knowing when and how to incorporate scientifically sound clinical interventions.

Some thoughts about Chaplaincy by Captain Dr. Gary Barkman

I write to offer you an introduction to the ministry of chaplaincy with the DILN, either as a career path in full-time chaplain role, or in addition to other forms of ministry. Students will consider a theological basis for chaplaincy and learn the history of chaplaincy in the United States of America. Students will be introduced to the many places chaplains serve and understand the requirements for becoming a chaplain. Denominational endorsement for chaplaincy service requires theological education and experience commensurate for the ministry context.  The course(s) you will take provide an overview of the nature and history of chaplaincy ministry, including the chaplaincy’s identity, purpose, and ethical and legal parameters. You will examine the Biblical and Theological foundations of a ministry of presence, which often comprises the core of chaplaincy ministry.

You also will study the various types of chaplaincy ministry and explore their commonalities, distinctives, and expectations. Additionally, the course(s) will develop a professional comprehensive range of biblical-theological knowledge, skills and abilities for ministry leadership in Chaplaincy. Supplemental areas of expertise will be introduced at a basic level focusing on specialized skills in pastoral, caregiver and emotional/spiritual support for a Chaplain. The emphasis is to develop a basic understanding of how chaplaincy has the opportunity to impact organizations with the Gospel message in military, institutional and organizational communities.

Sincerely, For the saving of souls at any cost

Captain, Gary W. Barkman, Ph.D., D.C.C., Th.D., D.Min.
